Creative Energy’s Low-Carbon District Energy System (LCDES) is expected to offset over 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over 30 years, the equivalent to planting a 4,000-acre forest, approximately 16 times the size of Thompson River University’s (TRU) Kamloops campus. The LCDES will enable TRU to further strengthen their reputation as one of the most sustainable educational institutions in North America, and enable them to meet their zero carbon pledge well before 2030.
Overview and Project Progress
Creative Energy’s LCDES is currently under construction for TRU in Kamloops, BC, with over 3,000 m of pre-insulated steel piping being installed to connect the future Energy Centre- Sustainability Powerhouse to 13 buildings on the Kamloops campus in early 2026.
Later this year, work will begin to fit out the Sustainability Powerhouse, including the installation of five air-source heat pumps and four water-source heat pumps. This system, one of the largest of its kind in North America, will supply more than 90% of the annual heating energy for buildings connected to the LCDES.
TRU is the fastest-growing university in BC and has been rated as the most sustainable university in Canada by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s STARS rating system. Committed to becoming zero carbon campus by 2030, TRU is relying on Creative Energy’s LCDES as a foundational pillar of their strategy.

The LCDES will transition existing TRU buildings away from decentralized natural gas heating to a high-efficiency electrified heat source using a centralized cascading air-source/water-source heat pump strategy with backup boilers for resiliency. By combining different heat pump technologies in our district approach and generating thermal energy at a utility scale, we can achieve operating efficiencies of nearly 300% while still meeting the high-water temperature constraints of existing buildings, some of which were constructed in the 1970s. The Energy Centre, located at the heart of the campus, will feature a viewing gallery to showcase the university’s climate action leadership and serve as a “living lab” for engineering students and faculty.
The first phase of this project, currently underway, connecting 13 existing academic buildings, allowing TRU to decommission their existing building-scale boilers and achieve GHG reductions of nearly 95% for connected buildings. The LCDES will eliminate nearly 100,000 tonnes of GHG emissions over the 30-year operating term.

FUTURE EXPANSION
Future phases are anticipated to provide renewable infrastructure for further academic growth on the TRU campus, support the TRU Community Trust (an arm’s length development corporation established by TRU to develop market housing on campus), and connect to the neighboring City-owned Tournament Capital Centre and Canada Games Pool, an Olympic-sized recreational facility.

The LCDES will enable TRU to become zero carbon before 2030 while supporting sustainable development on and around the campus for decades to follow, and serve as a demonstration project for other environmentally-conscious institutions to replicate.
