District cooling system in Vancouver.
The first true district cooling system in Vancouver, our Main Alley energy system provides affordable, reliable, and efficient cooling for the City’s newest technology hub. The by-product? “Waste” heat that we can capture to provide a low-carbon heating source to the community by interconnecting our Main Alley system with the City of Vancouver’s SEFC Neighbourhood Energy Utility.
The construction
Five buildings near the corner of Main Street and East 5th avenue will combine to form Vancouver’s first tech start-up campus, spurring growth in the city’s tech industry.
What we are doing
Creative Energy is currently developing a new district cooling system for the Main Alley project, where five buildings near the corner of Main Street and East 5th avenue will combine to form Vancouver’s first tech start-up campus, spurring growth in the city’s tech industry. By utilizing an existing cooling plant in 111 E 5th Avenue which is located in the centre of Main Alley and upgrading it, the project will establish Vancouver’s first true district cooling system improving the resiliency and reliability, while simultaneously reducing the energy consumption by 20-30% compared to a standalone building-by-building solution. The system is being developed to include the ability to recover the waste-heat from cooling, which will then be used to provide low-carbon heating to the community. Future phases of the project are expected to incorporate thermal storage strategies such as Phase Change Materials (PCMs) to allow for expansion without needing additional capacity.
